Sudden Death

I put my step-son’s name into Google.  Just wanted to see if I could figure out where he was working.  Instead I found out that he passed away back in April, 3 days oddly of the anniversary of his Father’s passing.  He was 55 which is really young to die.  The obituary was kind of the final slap in the face to his father, in that they listed his step-father (the guy his mom married after his father got a divorce).  I am stunned to learn this and of course I wanted to know what happened.  I did some searching on social media and found out that he had Pneumonia and was unable to fight it off.

The kid had a child that never knew his grandfather (my late spouse) and I kind of want to tell the kid about him.  He is still a teenager and I realize that if I try to step in it probably would be very unwelcome.  I just really want the kid to know the truth so he doesn’t go through life not knowing.  If they were permitted to meet I think that my late spouse and his grandson would have hit it off swimmingly.  Of course I will never know that for sure.  I am fairly certain the kid has no idea of who I am either and I’m okay with that but he should know who his grandfather was.

Yet another reminder that tomorrow isn’t promised to us.  We weren’t close in fact the last time we spoke was 13 years ago the day after his father passed that he couldn’t make time to come say goodbye to, asking if his dad suffered.  I’m fairly certain the kid hated me and I’m okay with that.  He caused so much pain to his father, took advantage of his father and made so many empty promises.  He was the definition of disappointment.  Of course if he needed money he wasn’t afraid to ask his father.

I really have no words and am just in utter shock.  Not sure how his obituary slipped by me but had I known I would have at least gone to the memorial service.  I know I wouldn’t have been welcome.  I suppose everything happens for a reason.

Difficult situation. I wouldn't try to contact the grandson. You're right that it would probably be unwelcome. He may not even know that the grandfather (your spouse) existed. If he does know about him, he (your spouse) has probably been trashed by the family. This is one of those bad situations you just have to live with.
